29 March 2026 – day walk near Witley
Linda and Stuart will be taking us on another “Fancy Free” Walk.. Titled “Four Commons & a Mill”…. In fact, its Five Commons. ( Rodborough, Milford, Thursley, Ockley and Witley Commons)
Explorer maps 145 (Guildford) 133 (Haslemere)
Distance just under 8 miles of undulating, easily negotiated, forest and common land, the majority of which is on sand, so ideal given the weather conditions of the last couple of months. That said towards the end of the walk there are areas of mud requiring stout, waterproof boots.
It is easy walking with stunning views, a charming country village, some local history and places of interest, lakeside and dappled forest paths. The route is also ideal for dog walking.
Starting point is from the Webb Road, Witley (GU8 5QJ, National Trust car park at 10.00
What 3 words: – hired, pancakes, improvise. Parking is free to N.T. members, £6 charge for non-members.
The route (around 2 thirds of the distance) takes in the beautiful village of Thursley and a delightful pub “Three Horseshoes” ( bar snacks/starters around £10), but a hundred yards from which there is a large bench seat for those taking a packed lunch.
Alternatively, Stuart has identified an ideal spot just before the village where we can eat a packed lunch.
