Gold struck at Coppermines

Our weekend at the Yorkshire MC hut at Coniston Coppermines did not disappoint. The forecast was quite wet and the conditions on the way up were challenging, but most of the rain fell overnight so some at least got four outings over Friday to Monday.

Nine, including four fellow walkers from the STMC, had arrived by Friday morning and with high winds forecast, two groups headed downhill to Coniston Water and/or Torver, with three pubs in total sampled on the way back. A beautiful morning on Saturday lured us up the Old Man and various parties reached a number of other tops.

In contrast, Sunday started squally and those who didn’t have to head home opted for a visit to Tarn Hows. Finding the weather improving, most then headed up Black Fell and some up Holme Fell through interesting woodland and moorland landscape. Grasmere Youth Hostel provided accommodation for those staying till Monday when we nipped up Silver Howe and observed the first snow of the winter on the tops of Fairfield and Helvellyn before heading home at last. Many thanks to all and special mentions for Bernadette, Brian and Adrian for providing food for Friday and Saturday night cook-ins, and Bernadette and Paul for photographic contributions.
