Patterdale in April

On Friday seven of us set out along the Eastern side of Ullswater in wet and breezy conditions.  The rain cleared and we took the high route back to Patterdale over Place Fell.  The views were fabulous but the wind nearly blew us over as we reached the peak – a fellow walker reported that the gusts were over 60mph. Much needed refreshments were taken at the White Lion that evening.

On Saturday four of us set off from Kirkstone Pass on a near vertical and drizzly ascent of Red Screes, then followed a switchback route up to Hart Crag.  Two of the party continued on over Fairfield and St Sunday Crag, whilst the others opted for a slithery descent to the Hartsop ridge.  Thankfully the wind was less fierce than on Friday and the day ended in glorious sunshine.

Another group headed south east to Angle Tarn and The Knott, returning via Hayeswater Gill and Hartsop.

Then for both groups another refreshment stop at the pub was followed by Bernadette’s excellent spag bol.

On Sunday a group of 4 had great weather for Helvellyn via a busy Striding Edge, with many other walkers taking advantage of the calmer conditions. Descent was via Catstye Cam and Swirral Edge overlooking Red Tarn.

Those about to head for home later on Sunday and wanting a shorter walk before hitting the road decided to summit Sheffield Pike in the sunshine… and brave the mud on the tops – for some spectacular views.
