Beating the crowds on Snowdon in May

A cracking weekend in North Wales with a small select group, staying at the Gwydyr MC Hut in Capel Curig. One car stopped en route in the Berwyns to do a circular walk from Llandrillo (SW of Llangollen), up onto the Berwyn Ridge and back, which turned out rather longer than planned after losing the path and negotiating bog and tussock grass for some distance, but the weather was warm and clear and views spectacular in this quiet area of Wales.

Taking advantage of an unusually warm, clear, sunny Saturday, we climbed Snowdon by the relatively quiet Watkin Path. The summit was heaving with weekenders, but we soon regained some solitude by taking the south ridge to Clogwyn Du and returning to the cars along the valley.

A hasty bit of shopping in Beddgelert secured provisions for a fantastic BBQ back at the hut in the evening sunshine.

Sunday was overcast but dry, warm and muggy, so we hiked up Moel Siabod from the back of the hut, taking a somewhat precipitous path up to the east ridge, then descending via the scrambly northeast ridge.
